Typing a Special Character on a Chromebook Identify the Unicode code for the symbol or character you want to type. Here is a link to a Wikipedia page that lists many, if not all of them. You can find the character name in the Description column. Then make a reference to the 4-digit code in the Code column. (e.g. Left parenthesis = U+0028. You only need to remember the last 4 digits after the +. On your Chromebook place your cursor where you want the special character to appear and press the keystroke CTRL+SHIFT+U. This will cause a lowercase u (with underline) to appear on the screen. Now type the 4-digit Code that you noted in step one above and press Enter. Helpful Tips The 4-digit code can be made up of numbers or letters. When letters appear as part of the Code, they are not case-sensitive. You do not need to type Uppercase letters. Make a list of commonly used Codes and post them near your computer. This might be helpful if you commonly type words in languages other than English and need characters that are not on your US-based keyboard.
